Denman Island is a short ferry ride from the east coast of Vancouver Island, 75 km (46.6 mi.) north of Nanaimo. It is only 5 km (3 mi.) wide and 19 km (12 mi.) long and famous for its beautiful natural environment. It has many walking and hiking trails with easy access to its beaches. It is home to many artists and artisans. Cyclists, hikers and motorists share the winding rural roads with deer; visitors are cautioned to drive slowly everywhere on the island.

First Nations people first used Denman Island as a summer fishing site. Captain Richards was conducting marine surveys for the British Admiralty in the area in 1864 and named the island after Rear-Admiral Joseph Denman. In the early 1900s Japanese settlers lived on the southern tip of Denman. The General Store was built in 1908 and the Community Hall was constructed in 1912.

Denman Village is the center of the island's activities and is a short walk from the ferry landing. The village has stores, a post office, gift shop and bakery and a year-round crafts outlet. There is a range of accommodation on the island, including bed and breakfasts, cottages and campsites. Scooters and bicycles are available for rent.

There are several major parks on Denman. Boyle Point Provincial Park is on the water on the south end of the island and provides trails through old growth Douglas fir forest. Sea lions and eagles may be seen here. Fillongley Provincial Park is an 80 acre park on the south side of the island and features an unspoiled sand and shell beach and views across to Texada Island and the snow-capped coastal mountains. Bill Mee Provincial Park is located at the community-built boat launch on Lambert Channel, south of the Hornby Island ferry dock on East Road. Sandy Island Provincial Park is a marine park with a distinctive ecosystem on the northwestern tip of Denman and is only accessible by water. This park is ideal for a day or overnight canoe or kayak excursion.
