Saturna Island is a favourite of nature lovers, renowned for abundant wildlife and ruggedness. It is a hilly island of 31 sq. km (12 sq. mi.) with forests, orchards, and sheep farms, in addition to its shorelines. It was named after the Spanish ship "Saturnina" that sailed the area in 1791, under Jose Maria Narvarez. Settlement began in the late 1800s and the island remains a sparsely populated natural haven. Residents live mainly along East Point Road which runs across the island from the ferry terminal at Lyall Harbour. The population is about 375 people, making Saturna the least populated of the major Gulf Islands.

Saturna Island is home to a vineyard and winery and there is a range of accommodation available, including bed and breakfasts, cottages and an inn. There is an art gallery, two general stores, a pub, café and bakery. There are no banks on the island but debit and credit cards are generally accepted.

Much of Saturna Island's land is part of the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve. Scenic walks, beach strolls and hiking trails give access to breathtaking views. Canoes and kayaks are available for rent. Marine charters for wildlife viewing, diving and fishing can be arranged.

Veruna Bay, Winter Cove (part of Gulf Islands National Park Reserve), Thomson Park, East Point Park (part of Gulf Islands National Park Reserve) and Lyall Harbour are good spots for a waterside picnic or ocean swim. Narvarez Bay is a good choice for hikers, nature lovers and bird watchers. A panoramic view and wildlife watching can be found at the peak of Mount Warburton Pike.

The Canada Day (July 1) Lamb Barbecue at Winter Cove Marine Park is the major event on the island and has been celebrated since 1950. There is also a Saturday Afternoon Market at the Community Hall in July and August. There is an Artists' Studio Tour during the August long weekend and there are spring and fall pig roasts. Art shows, and theatre and musical productions take place periodically throughout the year.
