The BC Rockies are also known as The Kootenays. The name Kootenay comes from the Ktunaxa First Nation. Despite there being a Kootenay Lake, Kootenay River and Kootenay National Park, the Kootenays is the unofficial name of the area.

The East Kootenays include destinations such as Golden, Radium Hot Springs, Fernie, Fairmont Hot Springs and Cranbrook. The West Kootenays include Revelstoke and Nelson. Christina Lake is located in the Boundary District.
