Saltspring Island is famous for being the home of artists and craftspeople who wanted to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city. It is the largest (at 193.5 sq. km 121 sq. mi.) and most populated of the Gulf Islands. There are a variety of excellent accommodations to be found there.

Access to Saltspring Island is via ferry. The BC mainland ferry lands at Long Harbour and goes to Vancouver Island from both Fulford Harbour and Vesuvius Bay.

Sooke is only 25 km (15.6 mi.) west of Victoria and feels like a different world. Known for its fishing and wildlife, it only elected its first mayor in November 1999.
