When you travel Vancouver Island, a regular road warrior gives tips for good eats.

Here are the Nanaimo, Duncan and Saltspring Island eateries I always go to and wouldn't hesitate recommending:

1. Aladdin's Café
67 Victoria Cres
Nanaimo, BC

Small, family owned and run Mediterranean restaurant specializing in Lebanese and other Middle Eastern food. Excellent Spanikopita (spinach & feta pie), homemade hummus and even homemade lemonade (made with an eastern flair).

Daily the chef/owner has that day dinner specials -- everything at a very reasonable price.

2. Acme Food Co.
14 Commercial St
Nanaimo, BC

Funky, eclectic atmosphere and a very unique seafood bar. Seafood is always very fresh as the place is a couple of blocks from the Harbour and I'm assuming the chef makes a daily drive to pick it up because the quality is there. If seafood isn't your thing the ribs are also very good.

3. Thanos Greek Taverna
215 Terminal Rd
Nanaimo, BC

Solid home style Greek fare with excellent Moussaka and lamb dishes. The cheese appetizer called Saginaki is brilliant and worth going just for a plate of this and some fresh hummus & pita bread.

4. Gryphon's Liar
Hwy #1 in Cassidy, BC (outside Ladysmith on Vancouver Island)
Nice little Brit Pub atmosphere but really good pub fare. Had the beef dip which was hand carved roast beef, with a garlicky butter on one of the best sourdough baguettes I ever had. Caramelized onions tucked in the baguette as well so these guys go the extra mile in making a classic sandwich 1st rate!

5. Crow & Gate Pub
2313 Yellow Point Rd
Cedar, BC (just outside of Nanaimo going towards Ladysmith)

Best Brit Pub I've ever been in. Really wholesome, big portions of classic British food like .Bangers & Mash.. Sausages must come from a local butcher, made to order for the pub. Nothing deep fried on the menu either. If you like UK beers, they have a huge offering. Fabulous décor and attention to detail making the whole experience straight out of London at the turn of the century

6. Craig St. Brew Pub
25 Craig St
Duncan, BC

It's not that they reinvented pub food the menu is very standard to dozens of other BC Brew Pubs, BUT they do a wonderful job of whatever they offer. Excellent Taco Salad and Beef Dip. Their custom made local beers have won awards so the attention to detail runs through all the food and beer offerings, all in a nice casual setting.

7. Farmer's Market
Ganges, Saltspring Island

Located in the heart of the town right on the waterfront this is one of the most unique markets I have ever been to. Filled with dozens of food merchants catering to the organic, high end consumer, there is something to please everyone here. The meat pies from Bruce's Kitchen were some of the best I have ever eaten, and I even took 4 home for my family. Throughout the market you'll find homemade jams, jellies, fudge, curries, unique coffee & teas, sprinkled in with artisans presenting their own paintings, jewellery and clothing. You need 2-3 hours to do this place justice, so spend a Saturday afternoon exploring Ganges. Well worth the ferry trip.
