5 Reasons That Kits Beach in Vancouver is a Must-See

Kitsilano Beach Park (AKA Kits Beach) is a spectacular place to spend a day when visiting Vancouver. It’s particularly amazing when you land on a sunny warm summer day. My favourite reasons to hang out there are:

1. The Scenery
   While sitting on Kits Beach and looking west you can, on a clear day, see the mountain ranges of Vancouver Island. In August the sunset sets right where the North Shore mountains touches the water and is breathtaking. It’s no wonder they built the restaurant above the concession stand so as to get a better view. If you head north along Kits Beach you will see a huge swath of green. That’s Stanley Park.
2. People Watching
   There is no lack of interesting people on Kits Beach. Cute kids are found playing in the playground. The beautiful people can be found sun tanning. Bicycling, blading, yoga, tai chi and more all happen in the Park. For this blog entry, I lucked out and visited on the weekend during which Volleyball BC was holding a tournament. There were more beautiful bodies around than a person could stand.
3. The Logs
   Seriously, the logs on the beach are clearly strategically placed by parks staff. They are wonderful spots to either sit on (maybe to watch a sunset) or to throw down a towel and lie beside or lean against and read a book. In windy circumstances, they will shield you.
4. Kits Pool
   The swimming pool is gigantic and is great for kids with a super shallow area plus a slide on the deep side. The pool also caters to serious athletes with a 137 m length and dedicated lanes. It is salt water cleaned so you are not feeling as chlorinated as happens with other pools. The price is $5.38 for an adult for one time drop in. You can buy multiple visit passes and family groups are cheaper. See Kits Pool fees and passes for details. Harkening back to point 2, the people scenery is amazing.
5. Yew Street
   Yew St. is a north-south road that ends in a T at Cornwall Avenue. When you walk north across the street you are in the park and seconds from the sand. Better yet, there is a variety of restaurants on Yew St. Sushi, Thai, a couple or three Pubs, Starbucks, a bakery café, a Gelato place and more all in a tiny three block slope. You can worship the sun and then enjoy the restaurants without even thinking about your car.

To get to Kits Beach, you can take the 22 bus from downtown Vancouver. If you are driving the main intersection is Cornwall and Arbutus. There is paid parking on site both near Cornwall and further down Arbutus. Street parking is limited and on busy days and the permit parking sections are enforced.
