New Hazelton BC is a community of 750 people on Highway 16 in the northwest area of the province, 440 km (275 mi.) northwest of Prince George. The town is named after the hazel bushes that cover the terraces of the Roche de Boule range.
The backdrop for the town is the magnificent Roche de Boule Mountain and the Skeena River flows along the river valley. The town was established in 1914 when the transcontinental rail line came through the area.
The First Nations people, the Gitxsan and Wet'suwet'en people have lived in the area for centuries. European settlement began as early as the 1860s and the towns of Hazelton, New Hazelton and South Hazelton call themselves "the historic heartland of northwest BC"
New Hazelton accommodations (or in the Hazelton area) include inns, motels, bed and breakfasts and campgrounds.
