Facts about the Gulf Islands

  • The Vancouver Island region also covers The Gulf Islands, which comprise 100 islands and islets in the Georgia Strait. Saltspring is largest island at 193.5 sq km (120.23 sq mi.)
  • Main islands are Texada, Saltspring, Gabriola, Galiano, Mayne, N. and S. Pender, Thetis, Hornby, Lesqueti, and Denman
  • Pop. - 11,500 with 65% living on Saltspring Island
  • Significant Historical Events:
    • 5000 years islands used by First Nations Coast Salish groups
    • 1791 - Spanish mariners in area
    • 1858 and 1859 - British naval vessels surveyed the area
    • 1860's and 1870's - settlement began
    • 1930's - ferry service to Saltspring Island began
    • industries include agriculture as well as fish reduction, quarrying, logging and brickmaking
    • since 1960's - retirement refuge
    • 1974 - Islands Trust established to administer lands
    • 2003 - inauguration of the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve
