Coquitlam BC is more than a community just outside Vancouver. The 1858 gold rush was its start from a European perspective with it designated as the provincial capital city, but soon that job was given to New Westminster and eventually Victoria BC took over.
Coquitlam is part of the by the Tri-Cities area, which includes Port Moody and Burnaby.
The word Coquitlam is attributed to the Burrard Inlet Indians whose language gave us the words Kokanee and Kickininee a small red fish that would be a sockeye except for its size.
In 1909 Maillardville by French Canadian pioneers arrived by train, recruited in Quebec for their logging skills. Its name was taken from a Father Maillard the first francophone priest at Notre Dame de Lorde. Maillardville became the first recognized French Canadian settlement in BC. Learn more about the region at Fraser Mills Station Museum on Brunette Ave.
