Fort Nelson BC is located in the Northern Rocky Mountains and is a stopover destination for those traveling on the Alaska Highway. The Alaska Highway starts in Dawson Creek BC and Fort Nelson is at 480 km (300 mi.) The highway from Seattle to Fairbanks is 3700 km (2,313 mi.)

Fort Nelson began as a fur trading post but flourished in World War II when the Alaska Highway was constructed through the joint efforts of the Canadian and US governments.

Located in the centre of the northern Rockies wilderness area, it is an increasingly popular destination for tourists. There are eight major wilderness parks in the area and visitors come for outdoor adventure. There is skiing, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, bird watching and wildlife viewing. This area of lakes, rivers and mountains is vast and has become one of the principle wilderness destinations in North America.
