The island is 57 sq. km (22 sq. mi.) and is the driest of the Gulf Islands. There are shell middens at Montague Harbour that indicate that there has been settlement in the area for over 3000 years. Agriculture on this island was difficult because of the lack of water. The island remains a popular holiday destination and there are a variety of inns and bed and breakfast accommodations available. Scuba diving, swimming, hiking and sports fishing are all popular with visitors. You can explore the coastline by canoe or kayak, or by sailboat or motor boat.
