Check out the Travel In BC Short Listings for Nanaimo BC, which provide short descriptions of Nanaimo BC accommodations and a link to their websites.
Nanaimo accommodations give the visitor an opportunity to explore this lively community on the east coast of Vancouver Island, 110 km (68 mi.) north of Victoria. A full range of leisure and recreational opportunities are available, including world-class diving, shopping, golf, cultural events, hiking/biking and kayaking.
The Hudsons Bay Company established a fort here in 1849 after coal was found in the area. The famous Bastion dates from 1853 and is the oldest Hudsons Bay Company fort preserved in Canada. The name 'Nanaimo' comes from the word "Snuneymuxw", the name of the Halkomelem First Nations people who reside in the area. While the coal industry has died out in the area, the forest industry and good port facilities have assisted Nanaimo to continue its economic growth as a diversified manufacturing and business centre.
Tourism is a major industry and each July the famous Bathtub Race takes place across Georgia Strait to English Bay in Vancouver. Newcastle Island is a provincial park located just across from Nanaimo and visitors can view prehistoric sandstone carvings in Petroglyph Park. The Nanaimo District Museum provides background on the area's history. Malaspina University College is located in Nanaimo. Nanaimo hotels include brand name properties as well as independent ones.
