The IOC selected Vancouver as the Host City of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic
Winter Games at its session in Prague on July 2, 2003. The 2010 Olympic Winter
Games will be staged in Vancouver and Whistler from February 12 to 28, 2010.
Whistler will host the Paralympic Winter Games from March 12 to 21, 2010.
The Nominating Entities of the Vancouver 2010 Organizing Committee are the
Government of Canada, the Province of British Columbia, the City of Vancouver,
the Resort Municipality of Whistler, Canadian Olympic Committee, Canadian
Paralympic Committee and the Lil'wat and Squamish First Nations.
Founded in 1886, The City of Vancouver is home to more than 500,000 citizens.
Including the surrounding communities, the population of the Greater Vancouver
region is approximately 2 million. In a 2001 survey of the world's 200 leading
cities, Vancouver was rated as the number one city in the world in terms
of quality of life (William Mercer survey).
Located in one of the world's great cities and premier winter sports destinations,
the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will offer state-of-the-art
venues and unforgettable experiences for visitors and residents alike.

Whistler is home to 9,000 residents and boasts the largest ski area in North
America, with more than 7,000 acres of skiable terrain. Whistler Mountain
opened in 1966 and Blackcomb Mountain opened in 1980. In 1992, Snow Country
Magazine voted Whistler/Blackcomb as the Number One Ski Resort in North America.
Since then, various publications have continued to offer top designations
to the Whistler Resort.
The Vancouver/Whistler bid to host the 2010 Winter Olympics Games was selected
by the International Olympic Committee on July 2, 2003, outlasting the cities
of Pyeongchang, South Korea and Salzburg, Austria in two rounds of voting.
Vancouver will beckon the world and its athletes to the Sea to Sky Games
for three weeks in early 2010 and return British Columbia to the international
stage of host to the great nations of the world. This event will again serve
to remind us of the historic past in Vancouver with events of this caliber,
as the spectacular coming Olympic Games will harken back to Expo 86 and the
world's fair season two decades before.
1. Vancouver's Expo '86 was the highest ranked special category Bureau of
International Exhibition per Overall Fair Factor in the history of world's
fairs.
2. Attendance at the Vancouver world exposition exceeded initial estimates
by 60.8% with 22.1 million attendees versus a 13.75 million projected attendance.
