Squamish accommodations provide the visitor with a chance to explore this community at the head of Howe Sound, one hour north of Vancouver at the mouth of the Squamish River. The land was first occupied by the Squamish First Nation and the word "squamish" means "mother of the wind".
Forestry and BC Rail are the economic mainstays of the area, which is increasingly a residential community for Vancouver and Whistler. Tourism has become increasingly important to the area as Garibaldi Provincial Park and the Stawamu Chief escarpment are nearby where visitors can enjoy hiking, mountain climbing, rock climbing and wind surfing. Capilano College has a campus there and there is a deep-water port facility. In winter, there are large numbers of bald eagles in the area.
