Queen Victoria selected the name. The capital was transferred to Victoria in 1868 but New Westminster remained the principle commercial center on the mainland, its economy based on sawmills and salmon canning, until the rise of Vancouver overtook its development. It remained the commercial center for the agricultural district in the Fraser Valley. The city's waterfront area was developed in the 1980's and the Skytrain now links it to Vancouver.
