Sechelt calls itself "the land between the seas and the centre of the Coast". Its name comes from one of the Coast Salish Indian bands. Sechelt is popular for both its beaches and hiking. Tetrahedron Recreation Area is 6000 hectares (15,000 acres) and the newest park on the Sunshine Coast. It ranges in elevation from 900 to 1800 m (3000 - 5900 ft.) and includes nine lakes. There are extensive hiking and cross-country ski trails with four cabins for hikers to use. There are also hiking trails in Kinnikinnick Park.
Porpoise Bay Provincial Park is 4.5 km (2.8 mi.) from Sechelt and has a wonderful sandy beach. Camping is available and it is wise to reserve as it is a popular spot for family recreation. Nearby there is a salmon hatchery at Angus Creek where spawning salmon can be seen in the autumn. Also visit Sergeant Bay Provincial Park with one of the prettiest coves on the coast. There are several marine parks in the area that can be accessed by boat, canoe or kayak.
Golfing is available at the Sechelt Golf and Country Club. Try exploring the area by water. This is a great area to bring a kayak or canoe. Diving is also a popular recreation activity in the area. Divers enjoy the HCS Chaudiere, a former warship that is now an artificial reef off Kunechin Point at the entrance to Salmon Inlet. This spot is recognized as one of the top four dives on the west coast of North America.
Many artists live in this area which is the cultural centre of the Sunshine Coast and there is a self-guided studio tour available if you want to check out the local artists and artisans.
