Malcolm Island Activities

What a beautiful summer it has been so far. Since the end of May I believe it has only rained for 4 days. I love staying here. Whether in the upper or lower suite, the views are incredible from our private deck. At times the sunsets light up the sky till almost 10:30 at night.

They provide kayaks here which you can launch right off the beach in front of the lodge. As soon as you leave the deck you are on the beach and can walk for miles.
There are a couple of beautiful hiking trails. The Mateoja Heritage Trail can be accessed from town and goes past Little Lake to Big Lake where you can go for a swim on a hot day. Beautiful Bay Trail is a 5.1 km hike (one way) along the north coast of the island. If you are lucky, you may spot Orca whales as they rub themselves on the rocks close to the beach.
Fishing this summer has been amazing. Someone caught a 140 lb halibut last week. There are plenty of pink, spring and coho salmon and the crabs are in abundance.
Malcolm Island is a haven for artists. An art which originated here is the crocheting of old fishing nets into rugs; so soft and in a variety of stunning hues of green.  You can find original photography, glasswork, silver smithing, wood carving, soapstone carving and paintings, all influenced by life on the ocean.
If you are looking to “get away”, Sointula is heaven on earth.
