Protected bays and harbours provide scenic shelter for marine traffic in the Halfmoon Bay area. Located just 16 km (10 mi.) north of Sechelt, the tiny hamlet of Halfmoon Bay is located on Redrooffs Road.

This area was originally occupied by the Coast Salish nation, the Shishalh tribe, from which the town of Sechelt took its name. There are 38 identified archeological sites in the area containing shell middens, rock shelters and stone fish traps. These are now all protected by the provincial Heritage Conservation Branch.

European explorations of the area began in the late 1700s when the Spanish and the British (Captain Vancouver) first explored the area.

The Heritage General Store has ice cream for sale as well as a post office and liquor store. Near the General Store there is access to Redrooffs Trail. This trail offers an historical and interpretive walk along a sloping forested pathway. In July there is the Halfmoon Bay Country Fair for family fun.

Purpoise Bay Provincial Park lies at the southern end of Sechelt Inlet and is a wonderful recreation area for the entire family with good swimming on sand beaches and camping facilities available. The salmon spawning area of Angus Creek is a draw for visitors as are several provincial parks located within the vicinity.

Sargeant Bay Provincial Park has one of the most attractive coves on the coast and is noted for its abundant inter-tidal and marine wildlife. Smuggler Cove Provincial Marine Park is another lovely campsite and marine environment. Thormanby Island is a Provincial Marine Park with a sand beach that can be reached by canoe or kayak at low tide. Garden Bay Marine Provincial Park includes Mt. Daniel where there are great views of lakes, islands and inlets from the western peak.
