Oliver BC has a long history that began with the Inkameep Indians (also called the Osoyoos Band) settling the east side of Osoyoos Lake, thousands of years ago. However, a town called Fairview was created in 1890 as a result of gold being discovered. The town failed as the gold find ended and Oliver was created, a result of the premier of BC - known as Honest John Oliver. After WWI, Premier Oliver initiated an irrigation system project.

Oliver calls itself The Capital of Wine Country, as the investment of the irrigation system led to farming and viticulture. The entire Okanagan area (including Kelowna and Vernon) attend the Fall Wine Festival.
