Important landmarks, unique to Cowichan, can be missed in the rush to drive between Victoria and Nanaimo. Duncan, for example, started as a village with a post office named Duncan's Station. The city has been erecting totem poles since 1985.
Chemainus is famous for having faced devastation as a result of a saw mill closure and turning the situation around. This was done by painting many heritage buildings with murals depicting local history. The town is now tourist destination that attracts over 300,000 visitors per year.
Cowichan Bay is south of Duncan. Its first inhabitants were the Cowichan First Nation. You can learn about Cowichan culture at The Quw'utsun' Cultural and Conference Centre.
